Standard Security Procedure for Rebinding Private Key Shares on Cobo Guard

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Recently, we have received an increasing number of inquiries regarding device changes and Cobo Guard rebinding. To ensure the security of your assets, we are publishing this Standard Security Operating Procedure.

Please follow the instructions below strictly. Any non-standard operation may result in the irrecoverable loss of your Key Share, leading to permanent asset loss.

Cobo Guard is not only a security verification app, it also stores the MPC wallet Key Shares. The rebinding process between Cobo Guard and your Key Share is critical to the security of your assets.

1. Key Share Backup (Old Device)

After generating your Key Share in Cobo Guard, please complete the backup immediately:

  1. Open Cobo Guard on your old device and enter the Key Share backup flow.

  2. After identity verification, the system will prompt you to set a Recovery Passphrase.

  3. Once set, your Key Share will be encrypted and backed up to iCloud.

Correct Procedure:

  • Ensure the backup file is successfully created in iCloud.

  • Remember your Recovery Passphrase.

⚠️:If you do not complete the backup or forget your Recovery Passphrase, you will NOT be able to recover your Key Share, resulting in permanent asset loss.

2. Key Share Restoration on a New Device (Rebinding Process)

When switching to a new device, please restore your Key Share by following these steps:

  1. Open Cobo Guard on the new device and select “Restore Key Share.”

  2. Select the corresponding TSS Node ID.

  3. Enter the Recovery Passphrase you set on the old device.

Verification Step:

After restoration, confirm that the TSS Node ID displayed on the new device matches the one shown on Cobo Account Web.

⚠️: Do NOT uninstall Cobo Guard from your old device before completing the restoration, as doing so may prevent recovery.

3. Configuring Recovery Keys and Signing Keys (Enhanced Security)

  • The Signing Key is generated from the Main Key.

  • If the Main Key Group becomes unavailable, you may upgrade the corresponding Signing Key Group to become the new Main Key Group within the Key Share management interface.

  • If the Main Key and its backup copies are damaged or lost, the Recovery Key can be used to restore the entire key and recreate the Main Key Group.

If your Signing Key or Recovery Key uses a mobile signer, you must complete its backup in Cobo Guard and set a Recovery Passphrase.

4. Important Risk Warnings (Must Read)

The following situations may cause your Key Share to become unrecoverable. Please ensure your Key Share is backed up beforehand:

  • Device damage, loss, or replacement
(Note: Cobo Guard does NOT automatically restore even if phone data is synced.)

  • Factory reset

  • Modification or deletion of the screen lock password

  • Uninstallation of Cobo Guard

  • Changing or forgetting your original Apple ID

5. Additional Reminders

  • If your Key Share is not backed up or your Recovery Passphrase is lost, you will not be able to restore the Key Share from iCloud, resulting in permanent asset loss.

  • When changing devices, only uninstall Cobo Guard from the old device AFTER restoration is completed on the new device.

  • Cobo Guard is a core security component of your assets. Please manage each Key Share carefully to ensure full security and control of your funds.
